Bug Description

Hardware Information:

1st Occurance: Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop, DELL E173FP Display

2nd Occurance: Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop

Using CD Alternate Text-Based Installer:

Process is as normal until final package installation process, then in the midst of installing packages, the display goes black with a small mark (small, rectangular bit of yellowish/brownish lit pixels) in the center and another visually identical mark on the left side of the display.

The installation seems to continue. I gave each machine a bit of time to finish installling packages, and then I hit enter (assuming I was at the end of the package installation, ready for the CD to eject and the machine to reboot), the CD ejected, I rebooted, and the installation was fine. Even the display settings are perfect.

I used the same CD on other hardware setups and no problems. I have also verified the CD with the tool provided on the installer CD.

sorry, the error happens during text-mode installation, however, at then end Xorg works fine. So I guess it may be debian-installer issue.

I saw the same behaivior with kubuntu text install, a workaround is to select and vga mode at the start of the installation (in grub boot menu)

Issue does seem to reside in Xorg installer...

Installed Ubuntu Server (no Xorg) 6.06 (Final) on a HP Proliant Server with HP LCD display, no problem.

My guess is this issue is going to be a real challange for many users doing a first install.

Does it affect all LCDs...? All laptops?

Symptoms are slightly different from bug 127008 but cause is probably the same (xprobe.sh on laptop).

No one indicated which driver was being used; I'm assuming it was -i810 or -intel, in which case the fix for 127008 will fix this. If that isn't the case, please undupe this, and provide additional information including what driver was used, attach xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log, and the output from lspci -vvnn, uname -a, and xresprobe <driver>.
