cannot successfully connect via xrdp

using the daily bionic beaver build, installing xrdp via apt and adding a polkit rule for color profile I try to connect. it seems to connect but i'm seeing random "system program problem" dialogs and when i do connect the desktop is incomplete. the bar along the left is not present and right clicking does not allow launching terminal.
