Have you found a pdf file that actually opens with the version of xpdf in Ubuntu 12.10? I haven't. Of course the same was true of the version in Ubuntu 12.04, and Ubuntu 11.10. I forget how far back it was since xpdf worked. This is ridiculous.

This bug #1024533 would appear to be a duplicate of bug #943195, and bug #943195 has way more information.
