Bug Description

Oneiric (up to date, fresh install) does not log me in after update from alpha2-installation. I think this could be a xorg bug, but I am not sure. I tried to use ubuntu-bug to collect relevant information on a shell and hope I missed nothing when copying from shell into this window:

Hey,
I'm also affected. I did install the latest daily and updatet and now I only can log in via tty.
to solve this prob I tried:
 * choosing different sessions
 * create a new user
 * startx from tty
But I can't get X working.
xinit does work, but of cause you only get some terminal and no fancy windowmanger....
btw. since this problem I'm also affected by Bug #807306

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

I think this bug is related to Bug #807306 or even a duplicate. The workaround
mv /run/udev /run/udev.old (as root)
is also working here. I will mark udev as also affected, but I'm unsure about the duplicate.

I don't think this is a duplicate - I have XFCE installed and that session loads fine. I also have fully working keyboard and mouse. It's just the ubuntu / unity sessions that fail to load

Definitely not a duplicate of bug #807306. My keyboard works fine, and the workaround for that bug does not fix my system. I have a graphics card that will only run unity-2d (intel 855gm), and when I attempt to log in after an update (upgraded during alpha 1), there is no unity-2d option in lightdm, and the "unity" option that used to work (it still sent me to 2d), no longer does. If more information is needed, let me know. Also, can we unmark this as a duplicate? Could confuse new bug testers.

Ben Straton (fanum) wrote :

Ok, looks like I found a solution. For my situation at least. Hopefully it will work for others also. I noticed that unity-2d had disappeared from my session options, and my graphics card will only run unity-2d (if I select "unity" it will normally log me in still, but to the 2d desktop). After noticing that, I went to recovery console and ran:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure unity-2d

It gave me an error about the package being broken. Getting closer. I then ran these two commands to purge and re-install unity-2d and it also installed some other dependencies that were missing.

sudo dpkg -P unity-2d

sudo apt-get install unity-2d

So everyone try that, if you were running the 3d version previously it probably will not help, but with both versions of unity sharing more and more code, it is worth a try. Either way, this bug still needs to be unmarked as a duplicate, it has nothing to do with that other bug, and that is misleading.
