System Randomly Locks X

Bug #70537 reported by Peter Feger on 2006-11-06
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
xorg (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: powernowd

After doing an upgrade from 6.06 to 6.10 the system randomly locks up. Kubuntu is the display manager

System Specs are

  CPU AMD Athlon XP
Chipset nVidia nForce2 IGP [Crush 18G]
  nVidia MCP Super I/O
  ntegrated in Chipset
Main Memory Dual Channel Mode (128 bit)
  DIMM Type : 1GB X 3 (3 Gigs RAM total installed)
Integrated VGA Engine in chipset (Integrated Geforce4 MX Graphics)
8X AGP slot (not in use)

1 Western digital 80 gig ATA Hard drive
1 Maxtor 80 Gig Hard Drive
1 Seagate 200G Hard Drive
1 DVD/CD Combo R/W drive

This is not a heat issue as each time the cpu temp is at a stable 104 f system temp 91 f

CPU fan speed at 4200 rpm
Nvidia fan speed ( yeah i added a fan) 4400 rmp
Case fan speed 4400 (2")

THe only way to gain control is to reboot the system. There is no patteren to this that I can tell. this will happen even if the machine is booted up and no other programs are run.

On a hunch I removed the powernowd and installed cpufreqd and rebooted the system. The lockups have stopped. Can this be the cause?

Thank you for your bug report.

Are you using the nvidia binary driver? If so can you enable powernowd and see if the lockups occur with the open source nv driver?

Changed in powernowd:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Sitsofe, I was using the xorg driver at the time of the report, I have since upgraded to the nvidia driver. upon reinstalling powernowd the issue has repeated. When I upgraded to 7.0 and used the nvidia binary driver the situation is corrected, I susspect that the driver for nvidia that was shipped with xorg was the cause. I see that the drivers in xorg have been upgraded as well. Feel free to close this bug report as it is addressed in another bug 51991 and that is an active thread. To other users that come across this load the nvidia driver from thier site and is should clear the issue.

Changed in powernowd:
status: Incomplete → In Progress
