Running VLC crashes Xorg forcing return to login screen; similar behavior with QCAD

Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

System configuration: NVDIA NForce mother board, dual GForce 8800 GTS SLI, triple display panels running Xinerama. Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkak; updated from 10.04 LTS via update-manager -d. All applications mentioned below ran without problems earlier.

When attempting to run VLC, QCAD and Sun VirtualBox (WinXP), displays blank out and system returns to login screen; no option to file bug report offered or crash identified.

This also happens to me when starting VLC. It also happens when I drag the sheet tabs in OpenOffice Calc along.
Using Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, nvidia GeForce 9800 GT (nvidia driver version 260.19.06) and with 2 displays running xinerama.

It doesn't happen anymore after disabling xinarama

Most likely an xorg issue, so moving for triage.
