Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

I have been using a dual monitor setup with Ubuntu since 7.10 (with a very pleasant experience in 10.04, after kms became the default).

I upgraded from Lucid to Maverick three days ago (October 2). On my first reboot after the upgrade, I was thrown into the console (gdm start failure). The Xorg log report at that time is attached below. My xorg.conf (carried over unchanged from Lucid) was then:

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Configured Screen Device"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
 SubSection "Display"
  Virtual 2646 2646
 EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

After staying without a functional laptop for three days, I decided today to remove the xorg.conf. Lo and behold, gdm started. With one little problem - its now impossible to make it work in extended screen mode. It works fine on one monitor. When I try (using gnome-display-properties), the display is reduced to occupy part of one screen. Attempts to do the same with grandr fail with:

===
The program 'grandr' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 19 error_code 8 request_code 150 minor_code 7)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
===

I will try and attach screenshots that illustrate the problem above.
