Binary package hint: x11-common

Preparing to replace x11-common 7.0.0-0ubuntu45 (using .../x11-common_1%3a7.0.22ubuntu10_i386.deb) ...

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_1%3a7.0.22ubuntu10_i386.deb (--unpack):

... looking in that directory, there was a link from opera to ../../bin/opera

I couldn't find either an x11-common or opera package in launchpad to log this against.

Oooo. Much, much badness. After apt-get stopped on this symlink, I now have a completely hosed system. It's telling me to run apt-get -f install. This bitches that /usr/X11R6/bin is also owned by package "opera". But I can't remove "opera", because it's telling me to run apt-get -f install when I do that.

Thank you for your bug report. can you run "sudo apt-get -f install" and please attach the output if it doesnt fix it. Can you also attach /var/log/dist-upgrade file using the "attach files" in the upper left side of this screen.

Changed in xorg:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I saw this problem also when upgrading to Edgy. I have an archive of /var/log/dist-upgrade - please find it attached. Place it in a clean directory before untarring it.

I managed to get my install to continue by doing "dpkg -r opera", but no instruction told me to do this, and an ordinary user faced with this situation would end up with a hosed half-upgraded system. :-|

Unfortunately, I failed to note which exact Opera package version I had installed. Perhaps my /var/log/dist-upgrade will have this information.

I ended up fixing it with 'dpkg -r opera', and don't have the output any more.
