Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Using Karmic, playing movies and other GPU-demanding applications worked flawles, but since the upgrade, those are really slow. These applications (XBMC, Boxee, Totem, VLC, games) keep going on framerates 8-25, but mostly around 15. This is pretty laggy for watching movies.

I should confirm this too. As a matter of fact, even when kms is disabled, the video is somewhat slower than it used to be on koala. For instance, switching windows is rather sluggish. This last one is probably related to the the poor memory management.

Well, this issue is nothing compared to the main issue - regular system freezes. Is it a different bug?
Here's what I see in the logs when dri/kms is on:

Lucid Xorg, e.g., the window switcher, is much slower than Karmic even without dri/kms

gene (eugenios) wrote : a question about the memory usage

Hi everyone. As far as the memory footprint comparison between 9.10 and 10.04, Lucid is more bloated. I noticed it before, when without dri some desktop stuff is slower. By looking at my old screenshots I can see that the memory gnome-monitor applet is more filled now than it used to be before with some pdf files with graphics and more tabs opened on firefox. Unfortuanately, I do not keep top screenshots. So far Xorg figure seems reasonable so far. I also use amarok with a huge music collection. Amarok is known to be particularly memory hungry, however, it has not been a problem before. I will try figure out the culprit by killing one program after another.

Does Bryce or anybody else have an idea/suggestion to share here?

Thanks

I have 10.04 on a test partition with 9.04 as my regular system (9.10 never worked satisfactoryly on this machine). Lucid works fine in most respects, no problems switching windows or so. But games like BZFlag or Briquolo don't run smoothly under Lucid, although they run fast enough under 9.10.

Here are some graphics benchmarks I found on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting

glxgears:
9.04: 309 FPS
10.04: 484 FPS

GLBlur
9.04: FPS 36.5, load 63.5%, polys 28
10.04: fps 17.2, load 82.8%, polys: 28

GtkPerf
9.04: 11.4 seconds
10.04: 16.6 seconds

So for glxgears, 10.04 performs slightly better, but for GLBlur or GtkPerf, 9.04 shows much better performance. You can see that GLBlur is much smoother under 9.04. I thought perhaps 3D acceleration was turned off but it is turned on.

The computer in question is a Packard Bell EasyNote MZ35 laptop. Ubuntu 9.10 tended to crash so I've reverted to 9.04. 10.04 beta1 and beta2 liveCD wouldn't even boot properly, also a Radeon Xpress 200m related problem. RC and later run fine, but suspend/hibernate don't work.

This problem still occurs in 10.10 alpha 1. I only tested GLBlur: FPS 15.1, load 84.9, polys 28. This is booting from a live-cd, perhaps that might affect performance.

10.10 alpha 1 runs fine other than this, and the long standing hibernate/suspend issue. I did have a problem running the video test, where the screen is first red, then shifts to other colors after pressing a key. The computer does not respond to a key press. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del brings the logoff dialog to the foreground and after I cancel that, the test proceeds as intended, pressing a key brings the next color until completion of the test. Perhaps this has some bearing on this bug?

I decided to give the xorg-edgers package a test under 10.04. First I installed all updates, including linux 2.6.32-23-generic. This had no noticable effect on GLBlur, still around 17 fps. Then I followed the instructions on
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

I then updated my system again, which reinstalled most (all?) xorg packages. I now get 30.2 fps for GLBlur, load 69.8%, 28 polys. Not quite as good as 9.04 on this computer but quite usable.

And what about stability? Have you experienced stability related issues with
these packages?

On the whole, my computer seems stable enough. It did freeze once using BZFlag, an arcade tank game. Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F7, Ctrl-Alt-Del all did nothing. But I'm not sure that this has never happened using 9.04. Aside from this, 10.04 with the Xorg-edgers ppa works just fine

I've installed ubuntu 11.10 beta-1 on a test partition. Xscreensaver is no longer pre-installed, but after installing it and xscreensaver-gl, I find glblur produces approximately 30 fps at a load of 80% and 28 polys. Quite similar to the result for 10.04 with the xorg-edgers ppa but still not quite as good as 9.04.

Karesz, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Well, this is still an issue, I'll run the apport-collect command soon. But
I don't know, if it will be any better...
