When opening files with gedit from terminal and even when I typed ubuntu-bug xorg to report this bug,
I get the following error:
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
It seems this has been a long-time bug and still hasn't been corrected as of Ubuntu 10.04 RC.
