Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 9.04 beta on my notebook. It's not so old machine - HP nx6110.
I have been using Ubuntu on it since Dapper Drake (6.06) and all in all it was rather good experience.
Having tested some Alpha releases from previous versions (from 8 series), I found Ubuntu Beta release quite stable...
until yesterday update!

The installation was a breeze until I decided to update the system. After downloading 197 MB of updates I installed all of them. Before restarting the system the screen became striped displaying a lot of vertical stripes in various colors.
After the restart the error message appeared:

"Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode

The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory)
(EE) [drm] drm open failed
(EE) intel (0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI
(EE) intel (0): Couldn't allocate video memory."

The build in graphics is Intel 915 GM Express Chipset (or Intel 910 GM, I'm not sure).

I was trying to fix it using xfix option from the Recovery Menu, but I didn't succeed.
The bug is so serious that I couldn't restart the system and installed another Ubuntu 9.04 beta side by side.
I made another update and installed all the same 197 MB of packages except for xserver-xorg-video-intel.

After installation everything have been working great so far.
So I found the package that caused a serious bug and made my Ubuntu 9.04 unusable!

Reading the description of the changes of the package I found that the buggy versions of the package are:
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu4 or ubuntu3.
The package provided with Ubuntu 9.04 beta works great for me. So you have managed to fix tree bugs [(LP: #317457) (LP: #322646) (LP: #304614)] and make another one extra.

I hope my report will help You to fix that bug which makes Ubuntu unusable on my HP nx6110 notebook.

I hope it will help to solve the problem.

If you need any other info, feel free to ask.

Please fix that bug, because it's the first time I was really disappointed with Ubuntu, which IS my favorite Linux distribution.

Just updated xserver-xorg-video-intel to 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu version 5.

Everything seems to work as it should.
The updated package probably solved the problem.

Thank you for your effort to make Ubuntu better.

Yes, you are right. The bug was fixed in xserver-xorg-video-intel to 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu version 5.

Today I updated to the newer version of the package and there are no reasons for complaining.

Thanks.

This same bug is still happening to me, upon update to the final release of 9.04 from 8.10. My version of xserver-xorg-video-intel is 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu version 9.

After some work, I have been able to get X running pretty well. But every time I boot, it still tries to run in low graphics mode. So it takes ages to boot and I have to login through the command line. It always complains about tiling to the front buffer. I was getting them even before I switched to UXA, although now I only have one error, rather than 3.

I did find https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance#Problem:%20%20Huge%20performance%20drop%20with%20UXA%20due%20to%20tiled%20rendering%20disabled
but I'm not sure what to do with it.
