xorg fails to set the proper resolution

Bug Description

I installed Kubuntu from flight3 CD. When X starts I'm in 640x480. Which is not consistent with the xorg.conf.

Card is:
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R100 QD [Radeon 7200]

There are no HorizSync and VertRefresh entries in xorg.conf this
might be the same issue as Bug #29540.

I've done some research with Flight5 where the problem still occurs and updated <a href="https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29540">Bug #29540</a>.
