Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

The X server just segfaulted on me - I was just moving about on the virtual desktops and about to closeOpenOffice down; Xorg.0.log.old has the following in:

Backtrace:

1: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x7f5fc4fdc060]
2: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(XkbStringText+0x1c) [0x5705ec]
3: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(XkbWriteXKBGeometry+0x15a) [0x561cca]
4: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(XkbWriteXKBKeymapForNames+0x5bb) [0x56124b]
5: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(XkbDDXLoadKeymapByNames+0x18a) [0x56b1ba]

9: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe6) [0x7f5fc4fc7466]
10: /usr/X11R6/bin/X [0x432ad9]
Saw signal 11. Server aborting.

this is 64bit Intrepid with an i945; hmm since this is keyboard it's probably worht syaing this is a laptop with an external keyboard (PS/2 Model M on a USB converter).

Full log attached.

I have the exact same thing in my Xorg.0.log.old

This happened when I tried to use wine. I also have 64bit Intrepid.

Are you able to reproduce this issue on Jaunty alpha-2? If so, please collect a full backtrace - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.

Hi Bryce,
In my case this is a bug I can't get to reproduce on request on 8.10 so it would be difficult to say if there was any difference on Jaunty, however if mrans2000 has also seen the same backtrace it would suggest there is something in there. I've probably had only 1 or 2 X crashes since upgrading to Intrepid back in october so it's certainly a very rare failure.

[This is an automatic notice.]

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I have the same problem, but using the Nvidia binary Xorg driver (nvidia-glx-173), also on Intrepid 64bit.

I think the usb adapter in the original reporters setup may be important. This crash happens to me every 10 days or so, but as near as I can tell only when resuming from hibernation, or switching to the laptop when a certain USB KVM is connected. In my case, a Trendnet TK-207 (very cheap, like $20).

I'm going to try a new KVM to see if it resolves the problem, but I can do some testing in Jaunty if it would be useful. Is there any reason to believe this bug would be fixed there?

Paul, you have a completely different video card. You've not posted your own backtrace so there's no evidence you have the same bug.
