Bug Description
The graphics chip is Intel 845G, memtest86+ did not find any errors
Cannot start a Gnome session in beta intrepid ibex, always get a black screen and keyboard is locked
Arrives at gdm login screen, then after logging in hears login sound and can move the mouse, but keyboard not responsive and sees only a black screen (+ mouse pointer)
It works fine with intrepid alpha 5, but not with any of the betas, or the RC.
removing compiz (by booting into a terminal) fixes the problem

ok, manzur, here's what you should do:
start ubuntu without the splash screen and tell us if you see any error messages.
the way to start without splash is -at the grub menu- press "e", then go to the line starting with "kernel" and press "e" again. go to the end of this line, and remove the words "quiet" and "splash"

the problem is that i unsintalled it and reinstall intrepid ibex alpha 5 again, (this is the only alpha that works on my pc), so tell me other way to do it, it could be posible with my beta live cd, but tell me how!
thanks!
Dimitrios Symeonidis (azimout) wrote : | #8 |
i don't understand: do you still have this problem? or has it gone away with the new install?

i still have this problem in intrepid beta, so i uninsatll it and reinstall alpha 5 in my computer, becouse beta version is not working on my pc!
Dimitrios Symeonidis (azimout) wrote : | #10 |
ok, you can use unetbootin and a flashdisk (of at least 1GB) to create a bootable liveusb of intrepid beta.
otherwise, we can close this bug report and you can reopen it if you try intrepid beta again and have the same problem.
what do you want to do?
manzur (sl-solaris) wrote : | #11 |
ok, let me explain you something, it was not just one time i got this problem but a lot of time, i installed intrepid ibex beta like two time and i have the same problem, i tried to used live cd a lot of time, but it only shows me login screen, after intrepid ibex beta start session my computer freezes so i cant do anything else...
i tried to update from intrepid alpha 5, but after i update it and reboot it i got the same problem: it freezes after login....
i can help using the live cd! please tell me how...
Dimitrios Symeonidis (azimout) wrote : | #12 |
as i explained above:
1) download the 8.10 beta iso (if you don't already have that)
2) find a >= 1GB flashdisk and use unetbootin to create burn the iso in 1) to the flash disk
3) boot from the flash disk
4) start ubuntu without the splash screen and tell us if you see any error messages.
the way to start without splash is -at the grub menu- press "e", then go to the line starting with "kernel" and press "e" again. go to the end of this line, and remove the words "quiet" and "splash"
manzur (sl-solaris) wrote : | #13 |
my actual flash disk only has 256 mb, the other one i had is broken, so i have the iso, but it could only works for me if i can help you with live cd,.
ahhh, and something else, you think that i get an error message, that isnt true, what happens is that my pc freezes so i have to turn off my pc manually...
manzur (sl-solaris) wrote : | #14 |
or i could try with wubi, what do you tell me?
Dimitrios Symeonidis (azimout) wrote : | #15 |
no, wubi won't do
and about the error message, i just want to see what is the last message in the kernel output
you could use an actual 8.10 beta livecd if you have one...

I have the exact same problem on a fuijitsu-siemens amilo laptop. Graphics is integrated intel 82845G/GL. I had hardy on it, then it worked most of the time with nosplash boot option. I tried intrepid live-cd alpha 5 and with that it worked fine. Did never try the beta live cd. Now I network upgraded to intrepid RC, and I cannot log in anymore. GDM starts fine, but the login hangs with a brown-orange background and a moving mouse cursor (arrow, not big X). Nothing else works. No ctrl-alt-F1, no sysreq-reisub, nothing. Only power off. Then I downloaded intrepid RC live cd, and booting from that is exactly the same, hangs on login. I can boot to the root terminal in recovery mode, but that's about it. I can try to get some info out of some logs later if that would help.

I have the same problem. I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid RC. Login window appears; but after entering user ID and password, the screen goes blank. I read in Ubuntu Forums that removing compiz and compiz-core will fix this problem which is what I did by entering the system in Terminal mode. I installed all updates ever since. If I install compiz and compiz-core now, the system behaves in the exact same way it did a few days go (screen goes blank after entering user ID and password). So, this issue is not yet addressed in Intrepid final release. I can use my computer now without any Visual Effects. I hope this is not the case forever.
Anders Nylund (nylund-anders) wrote : | #35 |
Yep, removing compiz fixes the problem. Of course compiz worked fine in hardy, but anyway this probably means that compiz should be blacklisted on intrepid with this hardware. Guess that could be done even after relase?

Thomas Sibley (thomas-sibley) wrote : | #38 |
I'm experiencing the same problem with, IIRC, the same video chip (Intel 82845G/GL) in a Thinkpad T60.
I network upgraded to Intrepid (from Hardy) last night / this morning and upon reboot I can no longer login with gdm. I enter my user/pass and X starts for just a brief second (black screen, but the cursor changes from the gdm cursor to the default "X") before (presumably) dying. I end up back at gdm (where it prompts for my username).
If I try to switch to a different VT, the display seems to get corrupted and I can't see any text. After a few attempts of this, the machine will sometimes lock up.
Everything worked just fine on Hardy.
I have not had time to fully diagnose it yet on my side (too busy today), but I'll try to post more details later.
Kayvee (vkkodali) wrote : | #39 |
I am not sure if Sibley is having the same problem as the rest of the posters have. At least in my case, I can get to the GDM login screen. After entering UserID and password, I can actually hear the short sound clip before the screen turns black.
Sibley, did you try removing Compiz?
Thomas Sibley (thomas-sibley) wrote : | #40 |
Kavee-- Sorry if I was unclear. I *can* get to the gdm login screen and enter my username and password. GDM accepts them, and X seems to start but then it immediately dies (causing gdm to start up again).
I have not tried removing compiz yet, but that is my next step later today when I'll be able to debug it more.
Drate Otin (drate-otin) wrote : | #41 |
Can this bug be renamed or moved away from being specific to the laptop?
I can verify the problem and workaround on a Dell 2350.
Upon "apt-get remove compiz compiz-core" I was able to login. Any information I can provide I shall upon request.
Drate Otin (drate-otin) wrote : | #42 |
I should clarify, I can get to GDM Login Screen at any time. It is when logging into gnome session that I have the problem indicated previously (mouse moves, hear logon sound, black screen).
I was able to install icewm and use it without issue, that is how I found the workaround. I implemented the indicated workaround and it does work.
Thomas Sibley (thomas-sibley) wrote : | #43 |
Drate-- The bug refers to an integrated graphics chipset that is present in many laptops. Your Dell 2350 probably has one. If it doesn't, it'd be good to know that the bug affects other chipsets as well. Can you attach the output of running the "lspci" command?
Thomas
Thomas Sibley (thomas-sibley) wrote : | #44 |
My actual chipset is similar (and served by the same xorg driver) but not the same:

Removing compiz does indeed stop X from crashing. I think the priority of this bug should be upped removing compiz is really a temporary patch to the problem than a solution.

Personal opinion, having been pagued by this problem since August 13:
1. Compiz developers being so fascinated by new "eye candy" tricks on high end hardware they forgot about the base of people out there running on Intel (heard of them?) hardware & drivers.
2. Deciding to abandon the 8.04 compiz code for the (vast number) of users that 8.10 fails on.
3. Decision to make compiz default forgetting about the base of people out there ....
My opinion, since I don't count, just an "ordinary user" testing fragile early builds:
If existing 8.04 package runs on the configuration, new 8.10 doesn't, have install put the right package on.
