Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Attempting a test upgrade from kubuntu hardy kde4 to intrepid. This test was performed in a completely clean fully up to date kubuntu virtual machine in virtualbox, default packages installed only.

This error was reproducible in 2 seperate tests. I started the upgrade by running kdesu adept_manager --dist-upgrade-devel. The upgrade proceeded successfully to the point where I was prompted to restart the machine. When I did this the machine booted as expected (proper display of usplash) up to the point where xorg tries to start. xorg fails to start and I am left at a text login.

I am able to login successfully. Running 'sudo startx' fails with the following output:

Just to follow up. I repeated the test with slightly different starting conditions.

Attempting a test upgrade from kubuntu hardy kde4 to intrepid. This test was performed in a completely clean fully up to date kubuntu virtual machine in virtualbox. This machine had the kde-members kde4 ppa enabled and was fully up to date

This error was reproducible in 2 seperate tests. I started the upgrade by running kdesu adept_manager --dist-upgrade-devel. Update-manager showed a message saying it had disabled some third part repos, presumably the ppa. The upgrade proceeded successfully to the point where I was prompted to restart the machine. When I did this the machine booted as expected. Then displayed the error shown in the attached screenshot. When I hit ok on that messagebox I was left at a text terminal. I was able to login successfully.

I ran sudo startx from the prompt. X tries to start and fails with the error in the second screenshot. I have attached Xorg.0.log as well as full upgrade logs just in case they provide any useful information

the output of lspci -nn | grep VGA was

I also had this problem but could solve it by using chown -r on /home/username

Thanks for reporting this issue. VirtualBox provides its own X driver, and this seems to be an issue with that. Reassigning

affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) → virtualbox-ose (Ubuntu)

Thank you for reporting this bug.

As per krangal's post, this issue seems a user permission issue. Marking as fixed.
