I can confirm this bug on my current hardy install (all updates as of march 15).
I am on 32 bit, interestingly enough also running fglrx on an mobility X1600, but as the OP also tried the open source drivers this does not seem to be the problem.
Starting mathematica from a terminal I get error messages like this:
X Error of failed request: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 157 (RENDER)
Minor opcode of failed request: 7 (RenderFreePicture)
Picture id in failed request: 0x4200035
Serial number of failed request: 34814
Current serial number in output stream: 35113
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 157 (RENDER)
Minor opcode of failed request: 4 (RenderCreatePicture)
Serial number of failed request: 29745
Current serial number in output stream: 29748

Just tried the suggestion above: running
mathematica -defaultvisual
solves this problem for me!
Many thanks!
