2008-04-27 11:16:54 Nikolaus Rath description I am testing Mathematica 6.0.1 in Hardy (Alpha 5 all updates). Installs fine and the gui runs since I have libstdc++5 installed. However, typing into a mathematica notebook no characters appear on the screen. Occasionally there are black dots where the letters should be.I have tried several different fonts with the same effect. Mathematica runs fine on the same box using Gutsy. The only thing I can think of is that the new xorg and mathematica are not communicating? (Mathematica's frontend is written in Motif, I believe). Log files tell me nothing; nor does starting Mathematica from a terminal. My box is 64 bit, 2GB of ram, ATI X700 graphics card. Am using the fglrx driver (version 8.02 on both Hardy and Gutsy). Tried the open source driver with same effect. Not sure where to turn here but this is troublesome as Mathematica runs beautifully under Gutsy. Mathematica 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 are unable to properly render the font in code cells when running in Hardy. In Gutsy, both versions work fine. Under Hardy, the letters are rendered in the same color as the background. For example, if you type the word Plot in an input cell, and then choose Format->Options inspector, Global and change the background of the document to say blue, the word Plot then appears in white (the default background color). Starting a new input cell and again typing Plot, the letters are no longer visible - in fact they are in blue. This effect occurs with or without compiz and independently of the chosen font. Also, the following error messages appear on the console: X Error of failed request: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RENDER) Minor opcode of failed request: 7 (RenderFreePicture) Picture id in failed request: 0x320588a Serial number of failed request: 224702 Current serial number in output stream: 224704 X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RENDER) Minor opcode of failed request: 4 (RenderCreatePicture) Serial number of failed request: 224987 Current serial number in output stream: 224990

2008-08-15 15:01:19 Jean-Baptiste Lallement None: statusexplanation I'm confirming it due to the number of comments, but regarding comment #73 it's clearly a Mathematica issue and not a Ubuntu one (invalid would be more appropriate) and the next major release of Mathematica should resolve most of this issues. Closing due to the last comment confirming this is a Mathematica issue. Thanks for your help.
