Thanks for the bug report. VLC and Mplayer do not enable hardware acceleration by default that I know of. So high CPU is expected. Please try using 'mpv' for the most performant experience.

If I have missed anything then please state it here in this bug instead of providing external links.

This was very helpful. On ubuntuforums, it was suggested that I check the "Optimus" setting under the "Video" menu in the BIOS. That solved half the problem. Then following your suggestion and changing the Multimedia engine in SMPlayer to /usr/bin/mpv solved the other half.

Nvidia currently works and CPU usage is now around 10%, which I am pretty amazed about. Thanks!
