Bug Description

4K monitor is not properly detected.

using xfce desktop "Display" utility, my monitor is detected as "Goldstar Company Ltd 27" with a resolution of 3840x2160 and 60.0Hz

The actual monitor is an LG 31MU97-B Black 31" with a resolution of 4096x2160.

I'm pretty sure the Monitor's resolution was properly detected in 15.10 (4096x2160). It was called "Goldstar Company Ltd" but
I do not recall which size was detected. (27" or 31")

I remember seeing a 4K youtube video in 15.10 and noting the black bands on each side of the display, due to the difference between 3840 and 4096.

kelargo, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please run the following command once from a terminal by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information:
apport-collect -p xorg 1570653

When reporting xorg related bugs in the future, please do so via the above method. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

kelargo, to clarify, were you using the radeon or fglrx driver in 15.10?

Hi, apologize for late response. I am pretty sure I was using FGLRX driver in 15.10. It was awhile ago.. memory is foggy.

Goldstar is the old name of the LG corporation.

The problem is logged in your dmesg.txt:

[ 10.609475] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* clock recovery reached max voltage
[ 10.609494] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* clock recovery failed

This probably also causes the later:

[ 46.014534] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* channel eq failed: 5 tries
[ 46.014557] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* channel eq failed

 Does this issue still occur with the latest Xenial 4.4.0-45.66 kernel?

following the instructions on http://penguindreams.org/blog/running-a-lg31mu97-on-linux-at-4096x2160-at-60hz/ the monitor is now able to display at 4096x2160_60.

my current kernel is -

Linux music 4.4.0-45-lowlatency #66-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 19 14:57:51 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and yes, I had to go through the tutorial to make it 4096x2160_60 as it was not detected after booting.

what is the next appropriate step to have persist? please let me know what to further test.

thanks

Improvements and bug fixes for your graphics card should eventually filter down from the latest kernels into the stable kernel series, and from then into Ubuntu. If you want to make sure of that, you can file an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org

If you want to build your own kernel, you can get the source from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/4.4.0-47.68

Have a look at the file drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/si_dpm.c
Use the following commit as an example https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/commit/?id=ea039f927524e36c15b5905b4c9469d788591932

Note the line _above_ the line in green. That is your graphics card. Try changing it from

{ PCI_VENDOR_ID_ATI, 0x6811, 0x174b, 0xe271, 0, 120000 }

to

{ PCI_VENDOR_ID_ATI, 0x6811, 0x174b, 0xe271, 85000, 90000 }

and also try removing that line altogether.
