Bug Description

I've done a clean install of Kubuntu (Gutsy RC for x86) with two extra display controllers installed. When the install is finished and the system reboots, no graphical mode is available -- only a command line login is available. Even the command line is not useable as the resolution is wrong so that the letters are so large that they run off the screen to the right and to the bottom.

In short the system is not useable as a workstation.

Full output from lspci is below:

I have removed one card and done a clean install, again wiping the HD. No usable X configuration is evident.

Below is the full output from startx and below that the new output from lspci

Lars Noodén (larsnooden) wrote : workaround found

Here is a work-around. Given the information above, the "Device" section needs to be changed from this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller"
        Driver "intel"
        BusID "PCI:4:0:0"
EndSection

To this
Section "Device"
        # "Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller"
        Identifier "ATI 0"
        Driver "ati"
        BusID "PCI:4:0:0"
EndSection

It may be safe to assume that it is probably not appropriate to either expect basic users to need to do the work-around or to know how to.

Lars Noodén (larsnooden) wrote : dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg finds the Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller, but then incorrectly matches it with the bus for the ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] on 4:00.0 instead of on 00:02.0 or 00:02.1
