OK, even with this intel driver configuration:

a) xv doesn't work
b) the machine still suffers random power-offs.

New workaround:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "intel"
        Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

This has given no trouble so far.

Please consider making the modesetting driver be the default?
