Bug Description
As you will be able to tell from the log files, I am testing out Utopic on an iMac. Prior to experiencing these problems I had been using 14.04 with no display problems whatsoever.
If I use the nouveau driver then I get regular 100% CPU spikes in /usr/bin/X. If I install the recommended nvidia driver (nvidia-331) and reboot then lightdm appears for a few seconds and then I get a blank screen (or I manage to log in quickly but then it locks up once we're in Unity, Gnome, KDE, LXDE or Cinnamon - tried them all!). Once it's reached this state, if I SSH to the machine and run htop then it indicates 100% kernel CPU usage (i.e. the htop CPU usage bar is coloured entirely red); although no individual process is listed as using more than 0.5% CPU or 2.5% RAM). Load average is 6.0-8.0.
I have created a new user account in case it was a setting in a config file somewhere in my home directory, but I get the same result with the test account.

John Delaney, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http:// cdimage. ubuntu. com/daily- live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:
apport-collect -p xorg 1363034
Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.
As well, given the information from the prior release is already available, testing a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.
Thank you for your understanding.
