unknown issue freezing system

Bug Description

had open document viewer and vlc media player - the media player froze as dideverything else - unable to click on anything.
eventually i was able to close the document viewer. then the media player. still unable to close/restart the system. manually shut the laptop down and restarted only to encounter the same problem.
agsain shut the system down manually and restarted ran software centre updater for flash update.
system is ubuntu 13.10 on a toshiba satellite A100 4g RAM, CPU T2050 graphics Intel 945GM x86

chris, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Saucy reached EOL on July 17, 2014.
