Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.14 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Krzysztof Okupski, could you please capture the xorg backtrace following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash ?

Dear Mr. Penalver,
unfortunately I'm not capable of doing that.

I'm currently running the 3.14.2 kernel and the bug persists.
I believe that it comes from the nvidia driver. Whenever the
screen freezes and I have to log back in, I see the following
message in the Xorg logs:
=> NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "NULL"

I hope this helps in some way. The freezes appear relatively
often, that is up to once every few minutes.

I've reviewed the log and think it is possible that my bug is
related to
=> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-prime/+bug/1220426

The touchpad appears to be "found" each time again and again
exactly when the crash occurs.

Hey,

I had similar problems with random freezes after upgrade Xubuntu from 13.10 to 14.04. on my Desktop PC (Acer Aspire 3100).
Distro: Ubuntu 3.13.0-24.46-generic 3.13.9.

First I thought that the problem causes Xorg, but then I changed my driver from 331 to 304. With 319 there where the same problems.

Now I got no freezes anymore.

Dear Mr. Penvaler,

the bug is, at least in my case, definitely a duplicate of:
-> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-prime/+bug/1220426

After following a temporary fix given there the freezes have stopped altogether.

Hi,

I have the same freeze on a clevo W655 with a Intel graphic card (With Xubuntu 14.04). So I don't think that's only NVidia driver which cause the bug.

When the laptop freeze, i can stop the freeze by log out and log in with Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Regards

Minium, if you use nouveau instead of nvidia, is this problem still reproducible?

Minium (minium) wrote :

Nope, when running on noveau the error does not occur. However, as I noted before,
it appears to be some strange interaction between the touchpad and the nvidia driver.
After deactivating the touchpad functionality (setting it on mouse mode), the symptoms
disappear as well.

Hi,
I'm also experiencing same freezes on my ASUS-U36SD with NVIDIA 331.38 driver. CTRL+ALT+DEL helps but it's quite annoying.
