Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

On Santa Rosa platform, using Gutsy Tribe 3 x86_64 version.

When click the button to enable "Desktop Effects" with "Extra effects" box checked, the system will stop to response. After a hard reboot, the desktop effects is enabled.

Disable the desktop effects will also cause the system stop to response.

I have exactly same problem. By default, in the desktop effects -dialog (system - settings - appearance) setting "Normal effects" was selected. When I chose "extra effects", system stopped to response. Anyhow I was able to move cursor, but eg. ctrl+backspace or ctrl+alt+f1 didn't work. After hard reboot "extra effects" was selected.

Now if I try to choose "Normal effects" or "No effects", system freezes (but I can again move cursor). After hard reboot "Extra effects" is still selected.

System: Gutsy Tribe 3 x86_64
Machine: Thinkpad T60
uname -a: Linux heikki-laptop 2.6.22-9-generic #1 SMP Fri Aug 3 00:20:35 GMT 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux
glxinfo: OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM 20061017
There seems to be nothing interesting in xorg.0.log

Ops, actually "Extra effects" is selected and I choose "No effects", after hard reboot "No effects" is selected. But if I choose "Normal effects", "Extra effects" is still selected after reboot.

I can confirm this too. ctrl-alt-bckspc now works though. Kill GDM and restart.

We can't enable visual effect now in Hardy Alpha 1. So we can not see whether this bug is still exist or not.

Xiaoyang, I suggest we close this bug as it was fixed previously in Tribe 5. Then, we should open a new bug if we indeed find this bug in Hardy. Also don't forget to cc the canonical-qa and the intel-hardware-certification groups for better visibility.

I just confirmed that this particular bug does not exist anymore with Hardy Alpha2 on Thinkpad T61 (965GM).
