Bug Description

This is a bug report filed immediately after a screen freeze occurred. The symptom is that during normal use the system will lock up. The mouse can still be moved but I can't click on any open applications. The sound services will continue to operate (seemingly in the background). Then I wait for about 10 to 20 seconds and the windows will flash seemingly in a random order until it finally shows just the wall paper (background) and then settles down with a crash report. At that point, the system is either completely back to normal, or partially OK (the missing aspect being the menu bars of all open applications - in which case a re-boot is necessary). I have already installed the current nvidia drivers and tried to remove nouveau but that seemed to have already been removed.

Hello Christopher,

I download a version from the current releases site on Jan 14 and created a bootable USB iso. I ran that directly from the USB a few times and could not replicate the problem. However, in that mode, I did not have the NVidia drivers loaded. I downloaded the Jan 24th version today with the intention of performing a full upgrade. However, I tested that version booting directly from the USB drive and found that every time I start firefox the system completely locked up, requiring a power reset to resolve.

The PC with the problem reported is my main work PC so I am very reluctant to upgrade to a new version of Ubuntu which may have more bugs that the one I am currently using.

I would be open to your recommendations but for now, based upon the issue I saw with firefox, will not perform an upgrade using the Jan 24th iso.

Colin Silvester, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Saucy?

Hi Christopher,

To be honest, I don't recall. I only very recently loaded Ubuntu on this particular machine and don't remember from which version I started.
I have another HP Pavilion desktop machine which has been running Ubuntu for several years and I've never had the same issue. However, it has a different graphics card.

I would be happy to install a later version of Ubuntu on the machine that does have the issue, provided that version is as stable as regular releases (either the .04 or .10 releases)...

Colin Silvester, with the computer you originally reported the problem with, could you please test 12.04.0 via http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/ and advise if this is reproducible?

Hello,

Sorry for the lack of activity. As mentioned previously, the affected PC is a primary use PC and I can't take too many risks with beta versions (or roll back versions). Now that 14.04 is out, I will upgrade and will post again to this bug page once I have been able to use it and detect whether this issue has been resolved.

Having now upgraded to 14.04, the problem is still present. In fact, it seems to be worse. Now, when the screen "goes mad" then I am left with whichever window was last in use (normally maximised) and can't do anything else. All menus are unavailable and I can't even open the terminal via CTRL+ALT+T. The only thing I can do is to cycle the power. The trigger for the problem to start seems to be a window being maximised (or at least, it seems to happen often at the same time as a window being maximised).

Would appreciate if this bug can be re-opened.

Hi there
The system crashed just now and I was able to capture the crash logs and upload.
I see the request for me to run 12.04 on this machine. Is it sufficient for me to run off USB rather than implementing a full install (and replacing my current version)?

Thx

Colin
