There has been lots of improvement in the area in Hardy. Screen settings are far better now. Btw you should have specify the type of your screen at least.

Galen Thurber (godfree2) wrote :

not fixed in 8.04
monitor has been specified, frequencies in xorg.conf
Option "DPMS"

Adam Niedling (krychek) wrote :

You still didn't say what screen do you have. This report is meaningless without that information.

confirm this bug on ubuntu 8.04
videocard nVidia 7600GS by Gigabyte - nVidia drivers suggested by installer
monitor iiyama vision pro 454 (HM903DTB) 19"

suggested refresh rates by gnome at 1280x960 are 51 and 52
51 actually 85 Hz
52 actually 60 Hz
monitor support at this resolution refreshes up to 120 Hz

It looks like not a bug, but a "feature" of nVidia drivers. See more details at README for nVidia binary drivers, FAQ chapter, last but one question

Detection of this problem is simple: xrandr -q returns list of available refresh rates where all modes differs from each other by frequency

Solution is also simple: put string {
Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
} inside Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf (of course without {} :) )
Maybe it's not the best way to solve problem, so can anybody suggest the better way?
