Bug Description

Some little horizontal black lines sometimes appear on the Ubuntu desktop. They disappear quickly, and there seems no obvious way to force the event to occur predictably.

The problem occurs with libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental but, unless I'm mistaken, occurred also with the nonexperimental branch. Furthermore, I'm running Ubuntu Classic and was not using 3d effects when the problem occurred (was simply typing text in LibreOffice).

My laptop (samsung 900x3e) screen also shows artifacts (mostly horizontal lines)

It is not only black lines, but also flickering on some of the first (top) lines of the screen. The artifacts in the top are always visible when in linux. The lines in the rest of the screen appear for example when selecting text in the gnome-terminal.

Some of the artifacts even survive reboots, and are visible in windows after reboot. However, up to now everything is fine when booting windows directly.

I have the same problem with my 900x3e. The first line of the screen is white, also when I reboot. When I completly shut down the laptop the line goes away for a few minutes and then comes back.
When xubuntu is fully booted the line is only about 1/5 of full screen width, starting left.

It also happens once to me that I saw a line at about 200 pixels from top while surfing the web. But this line disappeared after a few minutes.

Updating to kernel 3.10-rc5 has fixed this problem for MANY people including myself (using Samsung 900X3E)

David Monniaux, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.
