Bug Description

the laptop connected to an external display, it is driving only the external display when attached. if the hdmi cable is removed whilst lid is closed, upon opening the lid computer locks up- display does not come on. if lid is opened beforehand and the hdmi cable is removed, it causes system to crash, displaying screen corruption, being unresponsive to any input(capslock on /of virtual terminal etc).

*****UPDATE 20 Mar 2013****

It seems that simply entering a virtual console, and trying to revert back to the gui (ctrl+alt +f7, without reloading lightdm) also crashes the system , causing screen corruption.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

It seems that just entering virtual console and switching back causes the system to crash.

this problem is not experienced with 3.2 kernel. Perhaps this is a problem with xorg 1.13 and my hd4xxx AMD card, however I am running radeon open source drivers...

This problem is due to sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-lts-quantal package that is installed (with amd radeon hd2000-4000).

Other configurations do not seem to be affected

Installing xserver-xorg-lts-precise , and removing xserver-xorg-lts-quantal, fixes this problem.

Anton Kanishchev, xorg-lts-quantal is EOL as of August 2014. For more on this, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack .

Is this reproducible in a supported release?
