Bug Description

Updates to xserver-common and/or xserver-xorg-core currently available in Update Manager result in a failure to boot. The display screen remains completely black and no further action seems possible.

By a process of elimination, all other updates received over the past few days having been installed successfully, the problem has been identified as the two noted files.

These are now (25-Mar-12) the sole remaining updates; however, installing them causes the failure to boot condition. The problem is repeatable once a prior disk partition image has been restored.

Description: Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS
Release: 10.04

The following reports are generated using the pre-updated versions of the xserver files (i.e. versions of the software that do allow the computer to boot):

Alan German, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you for the follow-up on this bug report. My log indicates that
problems relating to xserver files were still evident in May, 2013. At
this point, I abandoned Ubuntu and switched to Linux Mint. Despite Mint
being a variant of Ubuntu, this OS does not have the same issues with the
video system. Thus my issue has effectively been resolved.
