Bug Description

While testing Ubuntu Oneiric Beta 1 (iso: http://releases.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso) on my HP-G62 laptop, when changing screen resolution in 800x600 or 1024x768 the screen goes black, have to wait it reverts back to 1366x768 on it's own.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 840865

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Since it sounds like you can (a) easily reproduce this, and (b) regain control of your system after reproducing this problem, it would be most helpful if you could trigger this bug, then run “apport-collect 840865”. That way we should get logs of what's happening during the problem.

Chris Halse Rogers (raof) wrote :

Hm, ok. Those logs indicate that the X server thinks it's successfully changing the mode, and there are no error messages visible anywhere.

That would indicate that this is likely a kernel bug. Could you please run ‘sudo xdiagnose’, tick the “extra graphics debug messages” box, hit ‘apply’, and then reboot? Once you've rebooted, could you reproduce the bug again and attach the output of “dmesg” here. That will have as much debugging data as possible!

It would also be useful to try a newer kernel, as it's possible this has already been fixed - http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-next/current/ contains builds of newer kernels. If this bug is fixed there then we've got a much easier job - just hunting down what change fixed it, rather than working out how to fix it :)

Hey carla-sella,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

Hello Bryce,
I've got Ubuntu 11.10 with all updates installed on my Laptop, but I'm still having the same exact problem reported in this bug description.
In #57 you can see I also tested on 3.1.0 ubuntu kernel but the problem was still there.

Carla Sella, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given you have already done this on a prior release, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
