Bug Description

xorg freezes randomly with 99% cpu usage on one cpu core. I can still move the mouse and use ssh to login/restart. Switching to a console with CTRL + ALT +Fx or using CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE (after enabling of course) doesn't work. Compize is disabled (no 3D support for the integrated graphics).
I believe (but I'm not sure) this happens when switching to an other application, showing the desktop or switching to an other virtual desktop.

I am affected by the same issue. Though I am running Compiz. I will add that killing applications over SSH, killing Compiz, or restarting GDM with `sudo restart gdm` generally has no visible effect. Though once killing VirtualBox brought my machine back to life for a few seconds.

It may be a coincidence, but I first noticed a freeze after installing Chrome 11 beta, which employs more GPU acceleration than previous versions of Chrome. I wondered if I am running out of video memory - but I don't know how to check my video memory usage.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information that would be helpful.

I've missed some information which might be relevant:

- I'm using a dual display setup
- I can restart Xorg with kill -9 PID but not with kill, kill -2, kill -14 or kill -15
- Xorg "only" uses about 90% CPU time, 10% are used by an other process which name I will report as soon as xorg hangs again (hopefully never ^^)

The process mentioned in comment #3 is kondemand/2
There is no day without at least 1-3 crashes and with every crash I'm loosing a few minutes of work. Please have a look at this problems. Thanks!

Hey Rechner-Tester,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
and run the command:

  apport-collect <bug-number>

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

Sorry, but I can not upgrade to natty for various reasons, so I can not test this bug with natty.
It would be hard to reproduce it anyway, if at all:
- the GPU driver will change from VESA to intel with the upgrade.
- I still don't know how to reproduce this for sure.

But the situation improved very much:
In the last few weaks (maybe 5-7) my desktop only froze two times.
I suspect an update as the reason for this improvement.

Hi bugbot,

to step in for Rechner-Tester. I have the problem of random hang-ups, too. And yes, it still exists. I'm running a i7 2680 with Intel HD 3000 Graphics T420. Problems with this GPU are reported for all linux distributions, e.g. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1728526&page=2 or fedora: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=680037
I tried Fedora 15- same problem. I also get random crashes when suspending the machine and sometimes just while working.
This is certainly not fixed and it puts some pressure on me to switch back to Windows. Now that I bought the stupid new machinefor more than $2000 and it crashes all the time and makes me loose my work I have to consider this. How can I help?

I can also confirm that this issue is still a problem in Natty. I have experienced three crashes today with the symptoms that Rechner-Tester and I described.

It is my computer at work that crashes regularly. I have never observed this issue on my machine at home, though I tend to use similar configurations on both machines and both have been running Natty since its release.

The symptoms of this issue seem to be the same as those in Bug #698121. I found the same error output in my Xorg.1.log file:

    Fatal server error:
    [250852.257] xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call

Bug #698121 is indicated as affecting the xserver-xorg-video-ati package. I do have this package installed, even though I have an nVidia card and I have not seen any mention of ATI hardware or drivers in this bug. Maybe the problem is more general than was previously thought?

Marking as Incomplete since Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 are no longer supported and no reports that it affects currently supported versions.
