Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 with standard LiveCD. Splash screen shows up properly, but when the window manager fires up, it sets the color depth to 24 bits, which is too high for some video devices when they are running in high resolution (including the admittedly old Dell Latitude C800 I'm on right now that runs 1400 x 1050). Changing xorg.conf to force 16 bit color looks great, and should be the default as it is a MUCH more universally supported setting than 24 bit.

MarcRandolph, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.
