login screen crash after idle

In Ubuntu 10.04 once i lock the screen and turn off the monitor and let the computer sit until it becomes idle the computer will lock up and not display the login screen after either keyboard or mouse activity (the mouse cursor will be displayed and move but there is nothing but a black backdrop. To resolve this problem the computer has to be turned off and back on.

sorry to dissapoint, but last time it crashed i could not even get the OS to
boot again. kept saying files were missing and corrupt. i'm just gonna
have to reload the OS. I will be glad to help you out if this problem
occurs with this next attempt at Ubuntu,
