Bug Description

[Copycat - A blackscreen can also appear due to a bug in the ATI driver - workaround involving gnome-screensaver (goto bug #546578)]

Binary package hint: nvidia-graphics-drivers

To reproduce:

1) Choose another user in your FUSA menu.
2) After logging in to that users account, log off.

Expected results: I expect to see GDM
Actual results: I have a black screen

Note: I can still press enter and type my password to log in. I knew this worked from the sound of my hard-drive. To be certain, on a subsequent test, I did ALT+F2 and ran "touch testfile". After a reboot, there was a file called 'testfile' in my home directory. But all this was performed with a black screen.

seems to be rather an xorg issue, could you add your Xorg.0.log to the bug?

I have this problem, too. All I can think of adding is that it only happens when you are trying to return to the first user that logged in, and it doesn't matter which user it is.

I've set identical permissions to two users, and have done the following:

Log into userA; switch to userB; wait on B; log out userB; blank screen. I repeated that swapping the users, and got the same result.

Log into userB; switch to userA; switch back to userB right away (this works fine); wait on B; log out user B; I get to the user login screen as per normal function.

This means I cannot just log in and then walk away leaving stuff unfinished, because my other user could log in for a few minutes, and then I'd be left with an unusable session :(

If it's any use to have more logs or other files posted, I'd be glad to do so.

In that case, we can confirm the bug, I believe.

I have the same issue, and everything is happening as described by the previous posts

After two days of irregularly switching between two logged-in users (no log-outs), the bug reared its head on another user switch.

So, the bug's not exclusive to having a second user log out. It's just that the original description is the easiest way to trigger it.

Would an "apport 560911 xorg-server" be useful?

What do you know? Wanted to add user-switch tag, so I decided to search it first ...

This bug is a duplicate.

emigrant, I'm not sure what you mean. You did not report this bug so how do you know they're exactly the same?

If you can still reproduce the issue with the new version of gnome-screensaver (2.30.0-0ubuntu2), I suggest filing your own bug report, probably against xorg, with "ubuntu-bug xorg".

@ david,
im sorry,
i don't know how to make a new bug report and i don't understand that xorg stuff... :(
(im new user from win)

my prob is:

gnome screen saver installed (from proposed)
log in user a > switch user > log in user b > log out >> freeze (black screen)

gnome screen saver uninstalled
log in user a > switch user > log in user b > log out > type username/pwd of user a + hit enter >> freeze (not black screen)

this happens with kubuntu also
(checked on live cd)

Hi emigrant, hit Alt+F2 and run "ubuntu-bug display" to report your own bug. Thanks!

TenLeftFingers, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
