Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg
I have this problem on both my desktop (nvidia card with proprietary drivers, 64-bit install, both -generic and -rt kernels) and my laptop (intel 945 card, 32-bit install, -generic kernel), both running lucid installed afresh from alpha 3, and configured for automatic user login.
On boot, X will start normally. Invoking a gksudo dialogue, entering the password and pressing enter crashes X and returns me to the gdm screen. I have also seen it crash when entering a password for a wireless network - gksudo is just *a* way to trigger the bug.
On my laptop the symptoms are slightly different, because X starts but it will often require Ctrl-Shift-F1 Ctrl-Shift-F7 to switch to the correct VT. When this is the case, gksudo will crash X, as in my desktop. However when X starts and switches to the correct VT the problem does not occur. The VT switching issue might be a hardware-specific problem, but the crashing on entering passwords is not.
Let me know if I can provide more information.
