Bug Description

After logging on to Gnome desktop for the first time after system boot, it kills xserver the first time the enter/return button is pressed. This happens whether you have any applications running or not. After logging back in, the enter/return key functions properly.

ubuntu 10.04 alpha 3 updated as of 3/7/10, 64 bit

This is after upgrade from 9.10 on 3/5/10, and bug started after 10.04 upgrade.

Do I understand correctly that you can open any applications (using the mouse), e.g. gedit and enter text there, but when you first press return X restarts?
Is there a crash report in /var/crash ? (Have you enabled apport? - see /etc/default/apport)

Yes, after first gnome desktop login after system reboot, I can open any application with the mouse, and the application functions properly. For instance I can open gedit, and save, and save as by using the mouse. I can use any application with full functionality.

The return/enter keyboard key kills xserver regardless of any applications running. If I boot the computer and press the return/enter keyboard key before opening any applications it kills the xserver, and sends me to gnome desktop login screen. After loging on for a second time there is no issue with pressing the return/enter keyboard key.

apport is enabled and /var/crash does have a log file. Title- "npviewer.bin crashed with SIGEGV"
