Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-mouse

After upgrading to the latest xserver-xorg-input-* packages on jaunty alpha, the synergy client mouse handling stopped working correctly. When the client is running, it properly transfers the mouse from the server to the jaunty client, but the cursor only ever appears in the upper leftmost corner of the screen on the client. Any movement of the mouse from the host server re-jumps the cursor to that corner on the client. Keyboard and mouse input generated using the client's input devices remains functional and keyboard handling through synergy appears to be working fine still also.

Sorry to not include these earlier, but I believe the relevant upgrade in xserver-xorg-input-mouse occurred from 1.3.0 to 1.4.0. synergy is at version 1.3.1-5ubuntu1, but has not been changed since this machine was installed.

I have the same problem, few details:
I remove the package xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (v. 0.99.3-2ubuntu2) everything works fine (well my touchpad doesn't, but synergy works). With the package installed I heve the seme problem as reported above.

This also affects me.

I have an HP Elitebook 8530w with both a touchpad and a joystick (pointstick). I found that if I move the joystick Synergy will start working as expected. If I use the touchpad, Synergy stops working and reverts to being stuck in the upper left corner. If I kill/restart synergyc, it goes back to whatever state it was in before being killed. If I kill synergyc, touch the touchpad and restart synergyc, it will be stuck. If I kill synergyc, move the joystick and restart synergyc, it works normally.

I had the sane problem but I got it working just by touching mouse preferences. In this case disabled and enabled again laptop touch pad. Something to do with the mouse driver/handling with Jaunty vs. other OS (version).

To expand on what others wrote, there appears to be something wrong with the synaptics driver. If I remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics from the client, restart X, and then connect, everything works fine except I can't use the touchpad on the client. If I leave the synaptics driver in, restart X, and then connect, everything will still work UNLESS I use the touchpad on the client. Once I do this, then the cursor remains stuck in the upper-left-hand corner. As long as the touchpad is not used, synergy will behave properly.

I can confirm this on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000 series). but if i turn off the touchpad (since hp's have that nice enable disable button) and restart x i can then use synergy just fine. but i turn off the touchpad so i don't have to worry about accidentally touching the touchpad and messing everything up.

Same Problem here. My workaround is to connect a usb mouse to the laptop and move it. After this, im able to use synergy until i touch my touchpad.

Manuel's workaround works for me. Have to remember that you actually have to move the mouse to get it to work.

I have this same problem. I just installed Jaunty on my inspiron 4000 today and the synergy client stopped working properly. The keyboard works fine and I can click, but my mouse is confined. Unfortunately Manuel's workaround doesn't work for me because the whole reason I don't I use synergy is so that I don't have to have another mouse connected to my laptop. I read on another bug report that some recent update fixed the bug, however I haven't gotten this update. I should add that synergy worked perfectly on Intrepid.

This is bizarre, I just plugged and unplugged a mouse into my laptop and my synergy mouse works fine now. I didn't need to leave it plugged in, and my touchpad still works and doesn't conflict with synergy. Weird but fortunate.

Have the same issue,

Desktop - 9.04 AMD64 - Nvidia - Server
Laptop - 9.04i386 - ATI - Client
Netbook - 9.04 i386 - ATI - Client.

I'm using quicksynergy, Not to sure if it will work just with synergy. Will give it a go :)

Dell Mini 9 has the same issue, running Synergy client to a Windows XP Synergy host. I can also fool it into working by plugging my usb mouse in, moving the cursor, then unplugging the mouse. It will continue to work until I use the touchpad.

I've got the same problem - just updated to Jaunty today.
I have the server running on an XP machine with an 8.04 server connected to it and my IBM Thinkpad R51 now running the 9.04 beta. Everything worked under Intrepid until today.

I can confirm Manuel's "fix" which may help to narrow down the problem.

Upgrade to the latest xserver-xorg-core:

xorg-server (2:1.6.0-0ubuntu11) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Add 175_set_pointer_screen_in_xtestfakeinput.patch: Fixes issue when
using Vino, mouse cursor can get stuck in the upper left corner of the
screen. The POINTER_SCREEN flag must be set explicitly for XTest core events to avoid
out-of-range events when the lastSlave was an SD with an explicit axis range.
Device events sent through XTest don't need this flag, they are expected to be
in the valuator range of the device anyway.

and report back.

Note that the default mouse driver since 8.10 is -evdev, not -mouse. This bug doesn't seem to be in either of those though..

Brilliant! Thanks guys.

I've noticed that there's a problem with my keyboard though - both my
desktop (Intrepid) and laptop (Jaunty) are set to UK keyboard layout, but
when I use quicksynergy and try to type on the laptop with the desktop's
keyboard, @ is Shift+2 like a US keyboard. At least this is an improvement
on the weird greek omega character that used to appear instead of @!
