Bug Description

This is a wierd, nasty bug in Hardy Heron. The relevant packages i'm using are: compiz 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2, xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu7, nautilus 2.22.0-0ubuntu3, and nvidia 169.12+2.6.24.12-15.33.
When I open a folder from my desktop using nautilus, and try to drag it to the desktop, the mouse moves a little, then the system hangs for a second or two (mouse becomes unresponsive), then X crashes. When I set visual effects to 'None' (i.e. disable compiz), file dragging works correctly. I'm not sure if this is an X bug or a compiz bug, but since it doesn't occur without compiz, i'm filing it here.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Make sure 'Visual Effects' in System->Preferences->Appearance is set to something other than 'None'
2) Open a folder from you desktop
3) Attempt to drag a file from that folder onto the desktop - Crash!

Expected behavior: no crash.

I just checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, and noticed this at the end:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80c780e]
1: [0xb7f26420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

This may be related to Bug #184651 . I'm attaching xorg.conf - not sure what else to include.

Server crashes are server or driver bugs, reassigning.

Probably another -nvidia bug.

Always include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log when reporting xorg bugs.
Also, see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for general directions about reporting xorg bugs.

I get the same problem when dragging things from one nautilus window to another (Ubuntu 8.04 64 Bit, Lenovo T61 Laptop with NVidia, Compiz/Emerald). I thought the problem was solved for a while, but with a recent automatic update, the bug was back (I believe it was the update that brought kernel 2.6.24-17).

No need to also have it opened against the server.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

The problem went away a long time ago.
