I have the same problem with my "nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600 GT (rev a1)".
That's really curious. Maybe it's only a problem of new nVidia graphic cards, because on my laptop with an nVidia GeForce 5, compiz is not crashing when I open the kopete message window. And the GeForce 5 also needs the driver nvidia-glx-new.

And this is not only a problem of compiz. The same problem appears if you are using visual effects with kompmgr or something like that. A bug report to this issue has been filed on http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100020 . This report also links to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2594 . So it looks like a problem of Xorg.

According to http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100020 this is not a KDE bug, but an X-server bug

I have the same problem, when I open the conversation with compiz running this restarts the X server. I hava a laptop with nvidia 7300 go.
This is a problem of the drivers? or is a problem of compiz?

I believe its a problem with compiz.
I disabled compiz and I haven't had the problem since.
This only happened for me when I was running with compiz
I am using a "nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M"

The same problem here, using Kubuntu without compiz and nVidia 5400

I can confirm this bug with the current nvidia(-glx-new) driver (169.12), kernel 2.6.24.16 and a 7950 card (or something like this x) ). Compiz is enabled. Oh and i run Kubuntu Hardy (the KDE3 "version") 32bit here by the way.
I also found this bug which seems kind of related to this one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/183715
Additionaly I had this bug in two other situations: After finishing an update with Adept and after closing ZSNES from fullscreen. Unfortunately I don't know whether these crashes have the same reason as the Kopete problem.
Another wild guess from a kernel+driver-hacking noob: While looking up the kernel and driver version to post them here, I noticed some differences; according to apt-cache I have the following versions:
linux-image-2.6.24-generic: 2.6.24-16.30
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-generic: 2.6.24.12-16.34
nvidia-glx-new: 169.12+2.6.24.12-16.34 (matches the restricted modules, but not the kernel image, does it?)
I always thought that kernels and drivers are very sensitive to version differences... or is this normal? As said, just my two cents ^_^".

same drivers and such as post above, but I am using a 7300 series card, with a dual core proccessor.

Only happens 60% of the time for me if compiz is running. Never had a problem without compiz running.

Same as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kopete/+bug/202158
