my home and login screen looks like i had taken LSD vivid distorted colours. and just solid color on normal start-up.

The radeon graphics driver is unable to work properly, probably because you are stuck in recovery mode where kernel mode setting has been disabled:

  [ 68.968] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-38-generic root=UUID=010804b7-21f1-4e4e-a968-18ae8286fbf2 ro recovery nomodeset

To fix this, please reboot and tap Escape immediately as soon as you see the first purple screen. Now navigate the menus and find the default kernel option that is not recovery mode.

When done, please confirm the correct change has been made by running:

  cat /proc/cmdline
