Bug Description

dears,

I just want to report that EYE for Gnome 3.4.1 installed with Ubuntu 12.04 proably contain a bug
Indeed, this utility freeze the computer when displaying some pictures in jpeg coming from my Nikon camera.

I also tried the same pictures with Ubuntu 10.04 - Eye 2.30 without any problem.
I can therefore conclude the problem is present in this new version 3.4.1

Could you inform me on the outcome of this report ?

regards
ALe

Please start eog from the terminal the next time you display pictures and share the output you get.

Thank you for your bug report, could you add your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.(old) to the bug and add a picture which leads to the issue? It's not likely an eog issue but rather a video driver one, what graphic card and driver do you use?

Dear Sebastien,

I don't think it is picture problem nor an environmental problem because I
run my ubuntu 10.04 in the same hardware (I only switch the disk with 12.04
installation instead) and on this old version the same picture doesn't
freeze the system.

Even launched using the terminal, the computer freeze and no message is
displayed on the terminal. I must perform a hard reboot. (remember old MS
stuff lmao)

I annex the xorg log and the pic causing blocking.

Regards
Alain

Bryce, could you see if that's a bug we could get fixed in a SRU?

The system has an old i865 graphics card, which is older than what we support in Ubuntu. Thus this issue is not appropriate for a precise SRU fix.

However, upstream (Intel) does provide limited support in the trunk code for these old cards. For these 8xx cards we just ship what they provide without distro modifications. Thus I would recommend that you raise the issue with upstream directly, by reporting it at bugs.freedesktop.org, and work on getting a fix into trunk.

Fwiw, often with these type of bugs the problem has to do with the dimensions of the photo exceeding some GPU hardware limit. You could diagnose this further yourself by experimenting with different sized images and see if there is an X or Y dimension at which the system fails. Knowing that number can help developers narrow in on what buffer limit is being hit.

Dear Bryce,

You conclude this Bug Report with "won't fix"

Do I have to understand that on this computer I cannot upgrade anymore the
Ubuntu Version I'm using ?
(as reminder this bug appear only with the latest version, no problem with
10.04 on same hardware)
Or even if not fixed in this release, this Bug will be taken into account
for further OS or EOG versions ?

For sure, as workaround, I can always uninstall EOG that became useless for
me and try to install a former version or to use another tool, but it is
the utility basically installed to display pics.

ALe
