Bug Description

Ubuntu running as a VMPlayer 15.5 (Win10) client freezes at Xorg GUI start.
boot parameter nomodeset avoids the problem, but then the resolution is limited and cannot be set to host full screen 2560 x 1440 anymore.

I have now restored the VM-image with Linux 4.18.0-24-generic #25~18.04.1-Ubuntu - no crash anymore.
Seems that the unattended upgrade to Linux 5.0.0-29-generic introduced the crash. Might be bug #1792932.
