Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. If you go into the System -> Preferences -> Keyboard and choose the Layouts tab. Make sure the layout checked as default is 'United Kingdom'.

Thanks chadwik, tried that already.
Also tried :
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
still refuses to produce pound sign.

Sorry that didn't work for you. After reading your bug report I noticed my pound sign wasn't working either. I went into the keyboard layouts and my layout was just 'uk', so I clicked Add, got the same or similar error window as in your screenshot. But I was able to select 'United Kingdom' and 'Default' from the drop down menus. Put a check in the default option for 'United Kindom' and removed the 'uk' one and now I have pound signs again! £££

I think this is a duplicate of bug 67188. Scroll down through the comments and you should find instructions on how to edit xorg.conf to get you round the bug.

Hi chadwik: Many thanks for your email, the fix you suggested also
worked for me. Sorry for the delay in response to your prompt help, once
again, thanks.
Norman.
