direct start into XFCE window manager gets stuck

Bug Description

New Ubuntu 12.04 beta system installed as Gnome-based. XFCE environment is preferred as Window manager, though.

When booting and logging in for the first time directly with XFCE chosen, the desktop creation gets stuck as soon as the multiple virtual screens should be shown in the respective sidebar. Only first screen is displayed, and every opened window is placed in the top left corner, without window manipulation handles. Leaving XFCE is only possible via the kill key combination (Alt-Print-K).

If, after booting, a Gnome environment is chosen for the first login, then left immediately, and then the 2nd login is an XFCE one, everything seems to work alright. Once arrived in the working XFCE environment, even frequent stand-by operation is working okay.

The detour via the first Gnome login seems to be an effective workaround but is a real nuisance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.

Hello Thad,

Yes, I'll do this in due time! As the bug occurs on my daily workstation
I will update some other machines from U 12.04 to U 14.04 first to make
sure the update works for me sufficiently stable.

As soon as I do I'll forward a short notice. So far, thanks a lot for
your continued effort to make thinks better by and by! :-)

Kind regards,

 Peter
