Bug Description

Sometimes the icons for Firefox and Thunderbird are replaced with what I assume is a default icon when alt-tabbing.

Restarting Firefox and Thunderbird fixes the problem.

Martin, is there a reason why your system boots with an old kernel version? Ubuntu 14.04 installs version 3.13 by default.

Back to the icon bug. When does this bug occur exactly? Does restarting the window manager via "xfwm4 --replace" fix the problem?

@thad-fisch the kernel probably an artifact from my Ubuntu 12.04 installation
xfwm4 --replace closed Firefox and left the window manager in a semi-usable state where I couldn't alt-tab

Does "xfwm4 --replace" always crash Firefox and break the window manager? If you run the command in a terminal window, does it generate any output?

@thad-fisch No the second time I ran it, Firefox didn't crash and the window manager was OK. The icons are still missing though. The command generated this output:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"
Waiting for current window manager (Xfwm4) on screen :0.0 to exit: Done

Most likely not related to the actual problem, but you could try to fix the Gtk message first (bug 1134202).

The next step is to install a more recent version of xfwm4 and test again. You can use one of the following PPAs or compile it from source:

https://launchpad.net/~thad-fisch/+archive/ubuntu/xfce-git
https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/ubuntu/xfce-4.12

Furthermore, I suggest that you forward this bug upstream. Thanks in advance.
