FWLIW, I have my printer configed through CUPS and it prints nicely from Xfce and it's associated apps. The above is very strongly pointing to an issue with Xubuntu and not Xfce. They built the packages wrong or something so if you could file a bug report with them then you would be informed when the bug is fixed. Can you try to install the a2ps package and retrying ?
