The '--x11r7-layout' is not 'xfonts-utils=6.8.2.1-5' and manually running 'update-fonts-dir' does not work; if it needs a newer version of 'update-fonts-dir' then it should probably be pre-depending on it having been already configured. |

Actually, the problem is not with 'xfonts-utils', it's with all the things that call it with the new option (which was only introduced in 1:1.0.0-4) and don't depend on that version or higher being installed.
Just having 'xfonts-base' depend on 'xfonts-utils (>= 1:1.0.0-4)' should be enough to cure the visible cause of the bug. |

xfonts-base (1:1.0.0-3ubuntu1) edgy; urgency=low
.
* Versioned Pre-Depends on 'xfonts-utils' so that 'fixed' doesn't end up
getting blown away if the new X11R7 font layout can't be configured on
an upgrade. (Closes: Ubuntu #54809)
