Bug Description

# Context

* Xubuntu 16.04 running XFCE.
* Rebooted after seeing some X driver update. Machine is laptop with "Optimus" hardware (Intel+NVidia combo).

# Steps to reproduce

* On desktop, right-click then choose "desktop parameters"
* A window appears.

# Expected

* window with complete and correct layout as usual
* window reacts to clicks
* little or no CPU consumed when window idle

# Observed

* window with incomplete/incorrect layout. See attached screenshot with red annotations.
* window frozen, click do nothing
* 100% one one core eaten up
* stace reveals continuous calls to brk()
