Changing synaptics touchpad to left handed makes tapping right-click

What I expected to happen:
    - The touchpad buttons swapped round, tapping stays as left-click.

What actually happened:
    - The touchpad buttons are swapped and tapping is changed to right-click.

Please explain in a little more detail. You expected the buttons to swap, but not be changed? Can the touchpad buttons really swap without changing their function?

Since the index finger is normally used to left-click, if the touchpad is changed to left-hand, I would expect the index finger of the left-hand to be used to left-click. By not swapping the function of the buttons, this would not happen.

There are two physical buttons on the touchpad - when the mouse settings is changed to left handed those two buttons are expected to swap functionality, the button that left-clicked should right-click and the button that right-clicked should left click.

There's also a third "button" - the surface of the trackpad. In addition to being able to move your finger along the trackpad to move the mouse you can also "tap" your finger (place your finger down and remove it quickly) on the trackpad to initiate a left-click. Changing the mouse settings to left handed makes tapping right-click.

Tapping is pretty useless if it activates a right-click instead of a left-click, I'll hazard a guess and say that 80% of the time you want to left-click instead of right click, so 80% of the time tapping can't be used.

Thank you for that great explanation. I agree completely, tapping the touchpad should not be a right-click. It seems that would be very confusing, since the touchpad is an integral part of laptop use.

Mouse and Touchpad > Device (SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad) > Buttons and Feedback > Buttons: "Left-handed"

and when I TAP on the touchpad, the touchpad would translate the "original left click" to "right click" and uhhhhh I don't think it's an intended behavior.

Tapping on the Touchpad would introduce the second button click to the system.
